Issues Treated

Intimate Relationship Recovery

As humans we are neurobiologically wired for connection.  As men we are socialized to go it alone.  These two realities are at odds with each other.  Many of the issues below can be viewed as intimacy disorders.  I work with men to learn how to develop healthy intimate relationships.  I work to bring attention to their attachment styles and other issues that interfere with trust, with the goal to develop a healthier sense of connection. This also means changing our relationship and communication skills. This is a process of learning new ways of relating to our partner.

Divorce Recovery

Divorce is sadly a part of many relationships.  With divorce comes grief, questions about what went wrong, and how to avoid the mistakes of the past.  I work with men to address these questions so that future relationships are able to thrive.

Compulsive Pornography, Sex and Love Addiction

I utilize the 30-Task Model created by Dr. Patrick Carnes, one of the foremost experts in treating these issues.  I also draw on other treatment modalities as needed for each client, including but not limited to attachment based treatments and trauma therapy.

Mother Enmeshed Men (MEM)

I use the Ken Adams model to treat the individual and relational issues created when a mother turns to her son to meet her emotional and other needs resulting in the loss of self-identity.  This also creates a disloyalty bind where men maintain their loyalties to their mother rather than to their partners.  I help men separate from their mother, find their own identity, and improve their intimacy with their partner.

Partner Betrayal Trauma for Men
This treats a form of PTSD for partners who have been traumatized by their  partner's sexual betrayal. I help men recovery from this this significant trauma.  This also includes facilitating therapeutic disclosures and other couples issues created by sexual betrayal.

Gambling Use Disorder
Gambling is another process addiction.  Although the symptoms are different than other addictions the underlying causes are similar, such as childhood trauma.  Trauma treatment and other modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Substance Use Disorder

This includes alcohol, street drugs, and pharmaceuticals.  This is also largely rooted in trauma and is treated similarly with behavioral, cognitive, and trauma treatment.

Family of Origin Trauma

This affects how we show up in relationships as adults. I use the Pia Mellody Post Inductive Therapy or Meadows Model to resolve such trauma.  Forms of childhood trauma include physical, emotional, abandonment, and sexual abuse as well as neglect and enmeshment.

Work and Career Transitions

As men we go through multiple changes in our work life, from changes in careers to retirement.   With these  changes we may ask what does this mean about me or my worth.   We can also struggle with boredom and a    lack of job satisfaction.  I help men process through such major changes and mapping what the future may  look like.

Codependency

This is fundamentally a breakdown in boundaries and the inability to differentiate ourselves from others.  I also use the Post Induction Therapy model to address codependency issues.

Mood Disorders

I treat issues such as depression and anxiety.  A variety of treatment tools are used to lessen the impact of these symptoms.

Grief and Loss

When a person loses something or someone valuable to them, feelings of grief can be overbearing.   Such losses include death of a loved one, loss of a marriage or relationship,  loss of a career or job, loss of health, or the loss of a pet.  As men we are told to be strong and to move forward, assuming the loss is in the past.  This can result in problematic ways of dealing with this unresolved pain such as with alcohol, drugs, sex, or workaholism.  I help men work through this process of grief and mourning.
